Wednesday, April 27, a few of us were fortunate enough to be able to take Marilyn
Caswell up on her kind invitation to bird watch at her B&B on the Bay. The
squirrel at the feeder amused us for a time, and then we got down to "serious"
business. Between birding tales, we managed to identify Great Blue Heron, White
Crowned Sparrow, Spotted Towhee, Purple Finch, Pine Siskin, Common Loon, Chickadee,
Dark Eyed Junco, Steller's Jay, House Finch, and a hummingbird which flitted
in and out of sight too quickly for identification. As we prepared to end our
session, we heard the unmistakable cry of the Bald Eagle. We caught sight of
wings, and then it lit on the tree top. It was a juvenile, just beginning to
show some white feathers. Perched on the next branch was a brazen crow, seemingly
intent on harassing the eagle. It jeered, then took the air to dive repeatedly
over the eagle. The eagle maintained its composure, lucky for the crow. What
a nice cap to an afternoon well-spent. Thank you, Marilyn.
